“SHHHIIIIEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTT!!!! ANG GWAPO NIYA PA RIN!”
Mae: Ha!? Sino?
Bernie: MALAMANG, SINO PA BA KUNDI SI JAKE?
Mae: Ha?
Bernie: Gaga, matagal ko nang pinagpapantasyahan yun, since 6 years old pa lang ako.
Mae: Oh… W-well it’s a good thing na nakita mo siya ulet.
Bernie: GOOD? The BEST kaya!
We continued on talking. And as we did, I was thinking… how am I supposed to ell her about how I feel about Jake? Moreover… How can I compete with a love that sprung for years? So many questions popped in my head… I was having a splitting headache…
*****
We sat on the table and kept on talking ’til it was early afternoon…
Bernie: OW?! YUN LANG DAHILAN KAYA KA NANDITO?
I just nodded in agreement.
*Weh? Hahaha!*
Bernie: Di ba may sapa jan sa likuran niyo?
Mae: Oo baket?
Bernie: ‘Lika! Ligo tayo! Ang init eh.
I just nodded as we got to the riverside. I took of my clothes leaving only my spaghetti strap sando, and pekpek shorts on, with underwear below. I thought that Bernie was going to do the same, but instead, she jumped into the pool in her undies.
Mae: Best! Ayusin mo nga yang sarili mo! Baka may makakita sa’yo.
Bernie: So? Edi swerte niya hehehe…
Mae: Seryoso ako best.
She did not pay attention and laid her body floating on the water. I just went on with it. After a few minutes, we were playing like children. Splashing and throwing water in each other’s faces. As we did our play. We had some talk about my ‘new’ life.
Bernie: Best… may i-sheshare ako sayo.
Mae: Ano naman yun?
Bernie: Wag mo sasabihin kahit kanino ha?
Mae: Uh… Okay?
Bernie: Promise?
Mae: OO NGA! Ano ba kase yun?
Bernie: Kase… na-alala mo ba ‘tong si Jake?
Mae: And…
Bernie: Well, wala si Mang Karding noon at…
Mae: At ano?
Mae: Tapos?
Bernie: We were in heat…
At this moment, my hair follicles start to raise. My heart thumps faster then…
Bernie: Alam mo na nga!
Mae: ANO NGA?!
She bows her head , clasps her hand and fingers together and mutters…
We had… our first… sex.
Mae: Oh?! DI NGA!? * Nalaglag ata puso ko doon*
Bernie: Ahmmm… Yup, he was my first.
I almost fainted upon hearing that. My vision blurred and my head spun like crazy. I tried to pull myself together and cover up my shock.
Bernie: Best ok ka lang?
Mae: Yeah, I’m ok…
Bernie: Parang sobrang shocked ka jan eh.
I tried to explain myself. But no matter how hard I try, the only thing that pops in my head are questions. How am I supposed to compete with a childhood friend? How can I compete with his first? Moreover, is Jake worth fighting for? Is he worth losing my best friend?
Bernie: Best, grabe ah… Affected much ka?
Mae: Ha? Di ah… na-shock lang ako hehe…
Bernie: Really?
Mae: OO!
Bernie: Okay… sabi mo eh.
We stayed in the water for a few more minutes. The heat of the early afternoon sun convinced us to stay longer.
I laid on one boulder in the middle of the river to take a rest. As I did, I stared at the clouds in the sky, they reminded me of my childhood days… when watching clouds was a hobby, when everything was much simpler. I let the water flow down my body as I soon felt drowsy.
I looked at Bernie; how am I supposed to tell her the truth? My best friend, is Jake worth it all? I sighed and soon fell asleep.
*****
A couple of minutes later, I felt Bernie waking me up…
Bernie: Best, gising na! Masyado na tayong babad dito.
I reluctantly followed what she said. I looked behind me and saw the sun slowly setting. She rose from the water first and dried herself with a towel. I did the same. It was then that I noticed how much hotter she is than I am, lessening my chances to win Jake over from 50% to 0.1% As I dried myself, Bernie went inside… I heard leaves rustling behind me. I looked back and saw nothing. I was forced to ignore it when Bernie called me in.
Umupo kami para mag-merienda. I took out the bread and fruits while Bernie made us some coffee. She was staring at me as I ate my snack:
Bernie: Ayos ka lang best?
Mae: A-Ah! Oo naman!
Bernie: Parang hindi eh! What’s bothering you?
Mae: Walaaaa
Bernie: O-okay, if you say so.
We were silent as mice as we ate our lunch. Suddenly, the rain poured.
Bernie: Ay! Nako naman!
Mae: Why best?
Bernie: Wala akong payong! Saka ang hirap sigurado sumakay mamaya. Maputik pa dadaanan ko.
Mae: Sus, best naman. You can stay for the night.
Bernie: Oh? Di ba magagalit tita mo?
Me: Of course not!
She just smiled and nodded. As the rain poured…
Tok! Tok! Tok!
Sino naman kaya yun? – I asked myself as I stood up and ran towards the door.
Mae: Ay!
Tita!,” said Jamie as she appeared from behind Tita Cielo’s back.
Tita Cielo: Oh, di mo man lang ba kami ipapakilala dito sa kasama mo?
Mae: Ay! Onga po pala, here is my best friend. Si Bernie po.
Bernie stands up and approaches us. The rain still pours from outside. Bernie smiles and takes my Tita’s hand
“Mano po!” said Bernie as she puts my Tita’s hand on her forehead.
Tita Cielo: Nako! Napakagalang na bata! Oh siya, kumain na ba kayo?
Mae: Opo tita!
Tita Cielo: Ikaw iha? – Ay teka…
My Tita gains a serious look as she stares at Bernie’s face. Titig na titig talaga. Bernie just smiles ands stands there.
Tita Cielo: D-Di ba ikaw yung batang kasama dati lagi ni Jake?
Bernie: A-Ahmm opo.
Tita Cielo: Ayun!
Tita Cielo holds Bernie’s hand and slowly walks away with her. Suddenly,
Jamie: Ate oh…
It was full of berries that I’ve never seen. Including small, yet enchanting flowers arranged perfectly.
Mae: Awww… salamat babyyyy!
I knelt down and embraced her. She hugs me back. It was such an adorable gift.
Mae: Ikaw gumawa nito?
Jamie: O-opo!
I hugged her tighter. She just giggles and pats my back.
Mae: Salamat!
Her innocent eyes flashed at me as I let her go. She shows cute, emanating smile as she runs towards Bernie and Tita Cielo.
Tita Cielo: Oh gabi na ah! Di ka pa ba uuwi?
Bernie: Ah- uhmm…
Mae: Tita! She’s staying muna. Wala siyang payong.
Tita Cielo: Ahh… sige, make yourself comfortable anak.
My Tita smiles and nods as she walks to the kitchen.
Before Bernie could talk I pulled her to my bedroom…
